What Are You Supposed to Think of Christianity When You See These Statistics?
Question by Dr Jazz ?? E??l A???????™??: What are you supposed to think of Christianity when you see these statistics?
One Christian stated these statistics today: America says its 85% Christian, yet only 12% go to church regularly, and out of that only 30% are active in their church. Even the ultra-conservative Daystar reported in a 2008 poll that 63% of ministers had some form of sexual “addiction” outside of marriage.
63%.
They profess to believe and live by the Ten Commandments then admit even they cannot live by them. And to top it all off, this site has caused more, not less, animosity and divisiveness with people who claim to have a philosophical understanding of “love”?
What’s wrong with all of this?
You know what I think it is? I think many of the Christians are using their religion as the perfect foil to claim some kind of superiority over others, and the religion is just a vehicle.Maybe some of them are atheists themselves and criticize atheists for some kind of personal reason. All of this adds up to atheists and rationalists asking again and again that if christians claim to be so loving why are they so unloving to anyone who dares to disagree with them.
Think it out and explain to me what’s going on here.
75% of the criminals in prison are Christians according to US Bureau of Prisons.
Some christians here are making pathetic excuses for themselves even using bible quotes to justify their own slobbiness yet they are judgmental to atheism.I was right it IS a ruse.

Christianity, or any religion, is very detrimental to ones morality.
It means they sort of believe God was necessary to create the universe but they don’t believe all the stories about him. In other words, they are really Deists.
awww… are those mean X-tians picking on you?? Die EVIL X_TIANS DIE!!!……….what?…nobody caught the sarcasm? awww….you athiests are SOOOO boring!
Because Christians can say they are trying (albeit failing) to attain some model of behavior.
Us rambunctious atheists are just drifting around in a sea of freedom, not living by any moral code. Whether or not we are more or less immoral then the Christians is irrelevant. They have a code. In writing.
I think that christianity does nothing to make good people. People become good by themselves and not by the influence of a god. I also think that the christian view of the world and self improvement is out dates. Look at the GOP, no one agrees with them; and they represent the most ‘christian’ view for America.
You forgot to mention that 75% of the criminals in prison are Christians according to US Bureau of Prisons.
Looks like a lot of christians are not practicing what they preach. Oh the irony.
When you are given statistics, you should request the margin of error and the confidence interval. In conclusion, most statistics are bullshit. And what is a ”Christian”? They have to live a certain lifestyle in order to be a Christian? Last I checked, all you had to do to be a Christian was to believe/accept that Jesus Christ was the son of God and your personal savior.
Maybe you should stop generalzing, and realize that not all Christians act the same way.
Very interesting.
But I Wouldn’t verneralize Christianity.
I’m Christian.. I dont attend Church as often as I should.
I dont think I am superior to anyone or anyone is superior to me (speaking here on earth wise)
and I am most definitely not unloving to those who don’t share my views.
Just because I am Christian doesnt make me perfect and not a sinner, we all sin. I just believe and have faith that mine will be forgiven.
Hopefully that makes some sense?
Have a great evening!
Cinn =)
*edit* Nice answer Pope.. thumbs up from me big time!
A lot of people think that “christian” is the same as “law-abiding citizen”. If they don’t break the law, they call themselves christian (whether or not they go to church or think about Jesus).
If some Christians do not live their belief, it doesn’t mean that belief is wrong. However it sure doesn’t make it easy to listen to them.
Matt 7:21 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”
So they just can’t “say”, they got to “do”. I think there may be some surprised people. It’s a good thing there is repentance (true remorse and a change of heart, not just saying sorry and moving on.) I’m sure we all have room for improvement.
Not much mystery here. People are screwed up. The world is screwed up. People know what they should do, but can’t do it.
Just validates what the bible says was the reason that Jesus came into the world and why he had to die…because we were helpless to do the right thing, incapable of living the life that we were intended to live.
Good conspiracy theory to think that it’s some Christian illuminati trying to control the world, but it isn’t. But there is a power in the world that does want to keep us from God.
I am a follower of Christ, but that hardly equates to a claim of superiority…rather the opposite. Utterly unworthy, without hope, I found myself loved and forgiven and restored to hope. I just figure there are others out there like me.
Christianity is a difficult philosophy to adhere to. We all sin and fall short of the Christian ideal. It is as simple as that.
Being a Christian does not make a person perfect in every way; and then of course there are those who are Christian in name only and haven’t ‘the slightest notion of what Jesus was all about.
First of all, let me call myself out as a non-believer. That said, I am sympathetic to those who had had the grave misfortune of having been raised under the auspices of religious delusion.
Most small children in this country, Christians attending church (or not) are raised with the idea that some Big Judge is always watching them, and if they’re not good, they’ll be sent to burn with the Fiery Red Guy. Were we not speaking of the (ha) Good Book, this would sound like abuse: emotional and psychological abuse.
Hon, people think God can see them shower. Beat off. Cheat at Bingo. People are raised to think their every move and thought is being double checked by some Big Judge in the sky. And one false move – whammo – fried to a crisp.
I don’t blame the indoctrinated for not wanting to go to the source of this trauma, but I understand it is part of the American Christian culture to pass down these stories and traditions. And I really feel sorry for the faithful, and for their children.
I have no fear of a Big Judge. And I know no one is watching me when I’m alone, and no one can read my mind. I was, thankfully, not raised with such paranoid delusions.
How to save them from themselves. That is the real question.
