Why Isn’t Tobacco/nicotine Considered a Hard Drug?

Question by Saruman….: Why isn’t tobacco/nicotine considered a hard drug?
Many people drink alcohol on occasion (infrequently), without being addicted to it, or even having it on a regular basis.

However, you almost never hear of somebody who “smokes cigarettes on occasion”. People are either smokers or not. Nicotine is so addictive that even a few cigarettes can cause addiction, and, unlike alcohol, it’s extremely rare for somebody to use tobacco on occasion without being addicted to it.

Despite the fact that alcohol has some of the worst withdrawal symptoms of any drug, and heavy drinking has horrible health effects to the body, due to the fact that most people can use alcohol without developing an addiction to it, it’s considered more of a “soft drug”, not a hard drug.

However, most people why try out cigarettes become addicted to it. Because most people why try out cigarettes get addicted to it, shouldn’t nicotine technically be considered a hard drug?

I don’t understand why people don’t consider nicotine to be a hard drug, it’s extremely addictive, most people why try out cigarettes become addicted to it. Why is nicotine considered to be a “soft drug”, and not a “hard drug”?

Because the products used to make cigarettes are not illegal products, yes they are addictive but they are not a drug. The addictive properties combined is the problem. this is what cause people to become addicted to it. Google what are the ingredients in a cigarette and you will be able to understand a little better.
