How Do You Deal With Family Members Who Are Addicted?

Question by Lady1980: How do you deal with family members who are addicted?
Both my sisters started doing drugs and drinking in middle school. They are now in their mid-20’s and both have gone to rehab for drug and alcohol addictions. I thought we were finally past this dark cloud but I called my sister one night and they were both stoned out of their minds. They say weed is no big deal compared to the things they used to do and I’m overreacting. We haven’t spoken since which was over a year ago. I kind of think that they should be the ones to reach out to me but they haven’t. Was I overreacting?

No, you are not over-reacting. Drug use is harmful to not only your sisters, but to your whole family. Remember to make yourself available to them, as they might reach out to you for help or advice on how to stop. However, you cannot allow yourself to be dragged down by their poor choices. Stand firm by not supporting their choices, but be accessible to them when they are ready to make healthier ones.

No, you are not.
In my opinion, they are still addicts and pot is no different than any other thing to get high. They still need another stint in rehab, but they will only change when they are ready, not when ppl expect them to.

It is true, in that you have to hit rock bottom before you realize you will die.
