How Can You Help Someone Get Treatment for Opioid Addiction Without Them Having Insurance?

Question by stilettos: How can you help someone get treatment for Opioid addiction without them having insurance?
I love this person more than anything, and I need to help them get treatment for their Opioid dependence, which is the abuse of prescription painkillers.

The problem is that they don’t have insurance, and most treatments include office visits and prescriptions for Suboxone, which is a very expensive medication that helps people get over this addiction.

Are there any free programs, or anything else I can do? I’ve tried reaching out to this person and helping them just by being there for them, but they finally reached out to me and told me that they seriously need outside help. I don’t know where to turn or what to do…help please?

thanks

There are lots of free programs. You just need to call the city you are in, the health and human services department and ask them what you can do.

I am sorry to hear that your friend is having a hard time with prescription opioids. I have battled with opiate addiction over the years and have sought help for my problems even when money was not available. The Department of Human Services in most states fund detoxification and treatment facilities that offer help for people who do not have insurance nor the finances to pay for private treatment.

If your friend truly wants help then I would recommend that you help them get in touch with DHS to see what is available in the city you live in. If there is nothing available where you live than I would suggest turning to a 12 step program like N.A. for guidance, there may be people who are willing to help your friend titrate off the medication and then help your friend get plugged into the recovery community.

Withdrawal is apart of recovery and most addicts have to go through it with out the help of treatment facilities. Hopefully it does not come to that but if it does, just help your friend in whatever way you can. Opiate withdrawal is painful but it can be done.

I wish you and your friend the best…
