Hi,
I came across your question and I hope I can help you out a little bit..

I am 21 years old and a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, so I have some experience with what you’re going through. The problem with narcotics is that your body becomes dependent on them after some time…this means that even if you are not obsessing about your drugs and they are not interfering with your daily life, your body is still somewhat dependent on them and addicted to them. Since you have been taking narcotics for such a long period of time now, without a doubt I would say you are somewhat dependent on them.

If you have chronic pain that is not supposed to go away, it’s tough to deal with what you are going through. Your body gets used to the dosage of narcotics you are taking, and over time, it takes more and more drugs to get the effects that you need. I think you would first need to decide if these narcotics are something you absolutely need to be taking. Is there anything else you can do or take for your pain? Does your doctor recommend that you still be taking these drugs? Or are you still on them because you’ve become used to taking them and you’re afraid to stop? Again, I don’t have quite enough information to say what your next step should be, but these are some questions you might want to think about. Is your daily life affected by your drug use? Do you think you could be happier without narcotics?

If you come to the conclusion that you do need to stop using these drugs, you need to discuss it with your doctor and do this safely. Even if you want to stop, you have to make sure you are very careful since you have been taking these drugs for such a long period of time. Your body is absolutely dependent on them, and stopping them abruptly without weening yourself off of them can be very very dangerous and painful. If you think that you are abusing the drugs or that you are truly addicted to them (other than just the fact that your body is dependent on them), you may want to seek out some type of treatment or help. I know you said that’s not what you are looking for, but it’s something you can just look into. Getting information doesn’t mean you have to actually follow through with anything.

I hope my answer has been helpful to you! Most of the information i have given you is stuff I’ve learned through my own experiences, but I have also done some research on the topic as well.

Feel free to check out the website I’ve started – it’s still very new but it is being updated constantly. At this website, I share my own personal experiences and I also try to provide people with helpful information. I encourage people to write in and ask questions and make comments as well. If you liked what I had to say and want more info, you can absolutely write in to me at my website (absolutely free) and I would be happy to talk to you further!
Again I hope I was able to help, and good luck!
