If You Are Trying to Stop Taking Painkillers (Codeine Addiction)?

Question by Chris H: If you are trying to stop taking painkillers (codeine addiction)?
If you are trying to come off painkillers (Co-Codamol) and you go to your doctors for help, Is there anything he can give you to stop the withdrawl symptoms.

I have been addicted to codeine for nearly 2 and a half years and im getting to the point where it’s ruining and running my everyday life. I desperately want to stop taking them but the withdrawals are too much for me and i always end up taking them again. I cant do the whole cutdown thing, as in cutting down how many you take gradually. it doesn’t work for me.

I’m just a 20 year old normal guy. No-one knows about this addiction but i feel (for myself) i need to stop. Help would be really appreciated as this really sucks.

You might want to consider checking yourself into a rehab facility. Maybe not your favorite option but it’s probably going to be your best bet as they’ll probably have medications to help ease the withdrawl symptoms.

Yes, there are medications that can help you. Ask your doctor about Tramadol. This is a non narcotic pain reliever. It is dangerous to stop taking narcotic all of a sudden. You need to do it under your doctor’s care and instructions. Even with help from medication a big part of it is going to have to come from you. It isn’t going to be easy at first but you have to decide to stay strong and figure out what you are going to do if you feel like relapsing. Figure this out before you quit and have a solid plan in place. There is plenty of help out there and if you just can’t do it on your own (and that’s okay) go to a treatment center. There isn’t anything wrong with needing more help than what your doctor can do for you. However you have to do it, do it. Like I said, it won’t be the easiest thing you have ever done but once you have done it you will be a happier person. If you want to quit, you will…have some faith in yourself 🙂
