Is Depression Like Addiction?
Question by ricky: is depression like addiction?
me and my gf got into a huge fight and i was feeling extremely depressed and kind of suicidal but things are better between us now but every now and then she’ll say or do something like ignore me when i ask a question and i’ll jump from happy to wanting to blow my brains out
and i’ve heard that cigarettes create like path ways in the brain that cause addiction and they kind of go dormant when you stop smoking but when you start again the come right back so i was wondering if depression might be the same way kind of cuz im not the suicidal type at all

If you tend to over react emotionally (extremely sad, extremely angry, etc) you may have a Borderline personality disorder.

I think having your girlfriend’s attention/validation/approval is extremely important to you. Just my opinion. You may be a bit sensitive to her reactions to what you say–and when she seems to ignore you, it hurts.
But going to the extreme of ‘blowing your brains out’ may be dangerous! I would let her know that is hurts your feelings when you talk to her and she doesn’t reply. tell her that her input–and opinion matter to you.
As for addiction and depression; They often go hand in hand. Many people medicate themselves from feeling depressed with cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, sex, shopping, gambling–any type of ‘compulsive’ behavior to “fill the void”–tbut when you stop doing the compulsive behavior, the depression returns–and sometimes it comes back stronger.
You need to dig deep and find the reason you feel depressed. By coming to grips with the reason, and dealing with it (changing the way you think about yourself and your life–into something worthwhile and positive)–you can help yourself!
best wishes.
