Does This Mean I Am Addicted to Cigarettes?
Question by latinasophia: Does this mean i am addicted to cigarettes?
When i started college I made friends with a whole load of new people & every single one of those people smoke. I always told myself I would never smoke. I would stand with them outside while they had a cigarette so I know I was a passive smoker. At a party i was a little drunk & just decided to light up & have a smoke. I know find myself finishing off my friends cigarette when she doesn’t want the rest & sometimes when I am at home I find myself wanting a cigarette & I get quite irritable & annoyed over the fact that I can’t as I don’t have any. Am I addicted?

I think that you are on your way to addiction, but you are not addicted yet. You are not smoking enough and what you are suffering is more related to the psychological component of addiction.

From your last sentence yes, unfortunately despite your resolve you have succumbed to peer pressure the commonest route into smoking, what hasn’t happened yet is the ‘habit’. As well as the powerful addictive component of smoking it is also ‘habit forming’. Trying to stop involves both withdrawal from the chemical addiction and the habit of smoking which becomes ingrained in the daily life of a smoker. This is the best chance for you to stop, leave it longer and it becomes increasing difficult to stop and you are in for a life of reduced health, monetary loss and having an odour about you not dissimilar to an ashtray.
