Is My Oxycontin Dose Too High?

Question by ecthelion2222: Is my Oxycontin dose too high?
Hello,

I’ve been taking prescribed Oxycontin for 3 months now. My pain issues are so bad that my healthcare professional and I, first cycled through everything from, Roxicet, to Tramadol. Finally, this new medicine takes care of my pain. I know that I am very lucky to be prescribed such a heavily watched drug, as OC isin’t normally prescibed to people my age (22). So with my medicinal history it’s no surprise to me that my Dr. began my dose at 20mg. I’m an opiate tolerant paitient and my pain levels have been a B*%&! to try and control. This medicine works so increadibly well only having to take 2 pills a day that I thought my problems were solved. Over 3 months with my Dr. my dose was steadily raised until we found an appropriate level for pain managment. Within 3 months my dose went from 20mg twice a day to 40, which is a 50% increase in mg. I’ve begun to get HORRIBLE headaches that start in the morning and last ALL day (no exaggeration!) no matter how many Advil I take. Could this be my body adapting to the higher doses? I have adapted to the OC very well for the most part; no severe side effects other than the common, itching and some fatigue. But these headaches are so horrid that I’m starting to fear a brain tumor or worse. Also, I would have naturally assumed a side-effect like that would have cropped up in the beginning not 3 months later. I’ve begun a headache journal and even a diet journal to see what could be causing them. Nothing is correlating so far. I’m usually fine in the morning and somewhere around 4 hrs after my first dose of OC they start to come. It’s on the right side of my head behind my right eye and even into the eyeball. It hurts like F%&*. Please, I would prefer this to be answered by a healthcare professional unless you have a personal experience similar with an answer not just a story. And also please, no lecturing about the dangers of pills; I’ve been taking prescribed narcotic painkillers every single day since 2005, so I am well aware that I have an addiction level and a high tolerance level. As I said I am an opiate tolerant patient. Thank you for your answers.

it doesn’t sound like a reaction to the oxy, and that dose isn’t too bad. but talk to your doctor about it and keep up those diaries!

fingers crossed for you from another chronic pain sufferer!

Healthcare professionals do not have time to come on here and hand out free advice. Your problem is with your dosage and only the doctor who prescribed it to you can help you.
