Can Amblyopia Cause Blindness?

Question by Vanessa: Can Amblyopia Cause Blindness?
I went to the eye doctor yesterday needing a perscription for glasses. All my life i had bad Astigmatism so i thought they would tell me that.

Turns out to an addition of having WORSE Astigmatism, i also have Amblyopia in my right eye. I read up on it and basically my main concern that if left untreated, can it cause blindness in that eye?

Only serious answers please, Thanks!

Amblyopia is a decrease in vision in one eye that happens even though there is no problem with the structure of the eye. It is the most common cause of vision loss in children.

You’re probably older than eight (amblyopia is best treated before age eight), so the best thing would be to have to most updated proper glasses (or contacts). If you aren’t currently having a dilated eye exam (getting eye drops) at your appointments, you may want to switch to a provider that uses eye drops. This helps get the most accurate prescription. There have been recent studies that show some improvement in visual acuity in teens who have not previously used an eye patch. A pediatric ophthalmologist will be able to determine if you are a candidate for such treatment.

Many eye clinics define amblyopia as a two line difference between the visual acuity of your eyes in best correction (glasses or contacts). This may be why you were told you have amblyopia. If you are a teen or older, it is unlikely that this is new.

It is doubtful that you will go blind from amblyopia after you reach the age of visual maturity (8-11 years)- the age when all the connections from your eye to your brain are formed. Your eyes will continue to change until you stop growing but with proper correction this should not affect the the connections between your eyes and brain.

There are other conditions, not related to amblyopia, that can cause blindness in adulthood including glaucoma, trauma, untreated cataracts, etc.

Amblyopia (or Lazy Eye) is a condition where your eyes are not working together properly on their own. Eyeglasses and/or contacts will help your eyes to fuse one image. Sometimes amblyopia can cause an early onset of cataracts, so be sure to see your eye doctor regularly (every year) and always have them do vision screenings for cataracts and glaucoma. I wouldn’t be too concerned or worry too much about it right now, as long as your doctor doesn’t show any signs of concern. If he see’s any problems he’ll tell you.
