Addiction and Personalities…. Personal/educated Opinions…?

Question by Davis Wylde: Addiction and personalities…. personal/educated opinions…?
Do you believe- as modern studies are suggesting -that it is the intent with which people employ the use of pharmaceuticals- narcotics mostly -that is the deciding factor of addiction?
Clearly some people deserve and NEED the relief which is found in narcotic pain killers. I believe it is the pressure put on doctors from the F.D.A. and people who have concrete rules regarding morality. And we all know that it is individuality which makes human beings… human beings. WE cannot apply any rules or standards which are not mutable to human beings. Am I wrong in my reasoning?
I am aware of the fact that people abuse the doctors who are compassionate- however, I don’t think people should suffer when their only relief and improvement in the quality of their lives comes from Narcotics.
What do you think?
If quality of life can be improved, shouldn’t the medical community do their best to ensure THAT happens- medicine is inherently dangerous, is it not?

As far as addiction I know that it is a disease that occurs in the brain. Some are predisposed and yet others acquire it from the use of certain drugs. Alcoholism and various addiction be it narcotics or amphetamines have been proved to make the brain respond differently to those who are not addicted. The addicts brain tells the user that to survive that they have to have this drug like they would need water or air. Reality is that they do not need such drug er go the addiction. Addicts do not have the luxury to get relief from prescribed drugs for pain management. When an addict quits using hi/her brain does not revert to preuse function but as soon as the addict uses his/her brain picks up right where it left off. This is why a long term uses has more difficulty quiting as apposed a short term user. Though the short term addict still has a brain telling them that they will die without it, a person who is prescribed medicine for pain management does not have the need to continue to use. Though addiction is forever sobriety is attainable through counseling and support and most importantly education. The genetic factor also applies to those who are predissposed if a person is aware of his family history and the lineage of addiction they can make informed heathy decisions as to use or not. Medicine has it’s purpose for those who are in need. Even a dying addict who has severe pain can be helped in thier pain management for quality of end of life. I am predisposed to addiction I have uncles and aunts let alone my father who all have been addicted, this is why I choose to stay away from all drugs. I have brothers and sisters who would claim they are not addicted but to see thier lives from an ouside perspective one is sure to see the patterns. Food is also an addictive force for those who are morbidly obese. Some tend to believe that fat people could just quit if they really wanted it. But the reality is thair brain is telling them that they will starve if they only eat a twothousand calorie diet. I hope this shed some light into addiction and in medicine. If you know someone who is addicted they must first come to a dicision to change then get help and maintain sobriety through support and continued counciling (this is all addictions).

Letter: Addiction Is Not a Choice
Individuals may have genetic predispositions and different brain inhibitory circuits. Addiction is a disease, just as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and so on are diseases. Addiction is not a choice. DHMC's drug treatment unit speaks of stages of change.

Generation jitters: are we addicted to caffeine?
However, recent research does suggest an association between coffee and nonfatal heart attacks in people with a genetic predisposition to metabolise caffeine slowly. It would be safe to assume that if a 240mg dose of caffeine, which Fournier consumed, …
