Am I the Only One Who Thinks That Gaming Addiction Is Not Real?
Question by Question Mark: Am I the only one who thinks that gaming addiction is not real?
I have noticed that there was a complete lack of treatment for someone who plays video games. The most common advice that I always hear is “Go outside and play more. Stop playing games.” This advise doesn’t really seem to work. I also think that video game addiction is just propaganda to scare people into not playing games and to go socialize. I mean, just look at any video game addiction documentary. The obviously try to do the whole scary music thing in there every time they begin. Most of the time that people claim that they are addicted to video games and say they can’t stop is the fact that they have no self controll. I also think that it is due to bad parenting that people become so called “addicted to video games” and the parents want to blame the games on their poor parenting practices. I mean, our society dosent think that hanging out with friends to much is an addiction right? Or using cell phones, facebook, Yahoo Answers, youtube, or the internet in general. People used to say television was an addiction or that you can get addicted to liking football a lot. But I believe that these are all socially acceptable hobbies and none think that they are addicting. People just see them as a waste of time. So why is it that I am the only one on this site that think that video game addiction is BS?
Another comment I hear about video games is that people say: The game developers make things in the game to get people addicted and hooked. No! They make the game fun and interesting so that they can keep their jobs. If not players would get bored really quickly and go to a different game and try something else.

I personally think a person can be addicted to just about anything. It’s the feeling they get when they are taking part in that activity that makes them want to continue doing it. People can be addicted to shopping, gambling, gaming… anything. Something becomes an addiction when the action becomes problematic and interferes greatly with someone’s life. If someone is blowing off work to level up their character, is refusing to shower or practice good hygiene in order to continue playing games… that sounds like an addiction to me! The person continues the behavior even though it has adverse affects. Also, our society is very “now, now, now.” And what I mean by that is we want instant gratification. Video games give that instant feeling of success when you beat a mission or level up, so it makes you want to continue playing.

I don’t think it’s real either because after playing it for a log time you get bored and stop. But when you have an actual addiction you can’t stop. It’s just one of those sayings.
