All of us use the internet on a daily basis for things such as “Facebook”, research, and entertainment, but we can control ourselves or even detach ourselves from the internet if need be. There are others, however, who are attached to the internet and have become addicted to it. Most effects of internet addiction are quite harmful though, and they include distraction from what’s important, lack of creativity or self-reliance, and lack of socialization.
The internet contains lots of useful information and websites, but informative and constructive websites are not factors that cause internet addiction. Instead, a person is more likely to get addicted to the internet due to factors such as online entertainment and interaction in social networks, among other things. For this reason, internet addiction can be a big waste of time, and can lead to a distraction from what’s important in life. Addicted persons will want to sacrifice school, college, or work in order to sit down all day and use the internet. Even addicts who go to work do not concentrate on their job and instead use the internet for personal interests during a big fraction of their working day, minimizing their productivity and efficiency. People addicted to the internet also tend not to get married, and in turn do not raise up a family or lead a natural life.
Many internet addicts rely on the internet for almost everything they do. When they are asked to carry out a task, they do not think about how to do it or what the best method would be. Instead, they just open up “Google”, search the subject online, and rely on their results in order to get the job done. If the addict did not find a solution to the problem online, he or she will be dumbstruck and will not know what to do next. This person will just give up, having convinced him- or herself that there is no solution to the problem without even trying to solve it themselves! This person will have lost all self-reliance and creativity, and will live depending on the work of others, instead of being an innovative and contributing part of society.
When using the internet, you are usually alone in your room isolated from society. If you are not using the internet much, then this is no problem. But in the case of internet addicts, they use the internet for extended periods of time, often sitting at their computer desk for hours at a time with no real-life human encounters or interaction. This seclusion from other human beings will lead the addict into feeling that he does not need to associate with others, and in turn will cause the addict into becoming a recluse. When these addicts come into contact with humans, they will not know how to act or what to say. Furthermore, they will no longer be able to differentiate between reality and fantasy, and will be oblivious to what is happening around them.
All in all, even though it may have a few benefits, addiction to the internet negatively affects the lives of addicts on the long-term. Addiction to the internet can cause distraction from what’s more important in life, lack of creativity and self-reliance, and lack of socialization.
