Causes of Addiction: How Do I Break the “borrowing” Cycle?
Question by clementine: How do I break the “borrowing” cycle?
My neighbor is very sweet and we have become friends. Her son is friends with my son. I am a single parent with one income. She is married with two incomes. We both struggle w/ money at times. She started “borrowing” things and now it has become a daily routine. Every evening, she politely asks for something – the rest of my laundry detergent, a carton of milk, a box of cereal, a package of hot dogs…etc… Nothing extravagant but little by little, it is cutting into my budget. I cannot tell her no because she is so sweet and she talks about money problems but I have a child to raise and never ask anyone for anything. I don’t want to have any hostility in my neighborhood or cause a rift between our sons. I need a diplomatic way to avoid this without confronting her. I want to stress she really is a very nice person.

Return the favor. On a daily basis politely borrow things from her. Be sure to throw in a comment or two about how difficult it is to support a household on a single income. If she doesn’t eventually get the message at least you are getting something in return. Or quite simply, let her know that you don’t have the extra to spare.
