Could Taking More Than the Recommended Dose of Narcotic Medications Cause Severe Constipation?

Question by Elija: Could taking more than the recommended dose of narcotic medications cause severe constipation?
I regularly take opiates such as codeine, oxycodone and hydrocodone in excessive doses, and sometimes go 10 days without having a bowel movement. The problem is that they are not my prescription, so I cannot talk to a doctor about what to do. I have been taking laxatives but all to no avail. I dont know what to do about not pooping! Even when I am not taking them, I STILL cannot poop, so I think I ruined my digestive system.

Narcotics are notorious for causing constipation.

Drink lots of water, eat plenty of fibre, and take a stool softener such as Colace. You may need to taske several pills a day but don’t take them all at once. Try taking 4 pills through the day so morning, noon, evening, and bedtime. Taking 4 at once would be seriously unwise.

You said “I regularly take opiates such as codeine, oxycodone and hydrocodone in excessive doses, and sometimes go 10 days without having a bowel movement.” Well first off stop taking the narcotics. Narcotic numb pain sensations but also numb the sensation of peristaltic contractions. That mean you don’t feel the call to have a bowel movement.

You are 15 and at some point your narcotics addiction will cause you to steal to support your habit or at minimum you will be caught with the narcotics in your possession and your life will change forever because you’ll have a criminal record that will follow you for the rest of your life. You need help to get off of the narcotics because the constipation is the least of the side effects.
