Do Painkillers Not Work as Well if You Crush Them Up or Mix Them With Food?

Question by Maccaa: Do painkillers not work as well if you crush them up or mix them with food?
I got my tonsils out yesterday and can literally swallow nothing. I’m on oxy and percocets , but the pills are big so the only way I can get them down is to crush them up and mix them into yogurt or ice cream.

But I’ve noticed they haven’t been working as well as I expected they would, or having the effect my doctor said they would. Could this be because I am crushing them and mixing them with food?

If you mean Oxycontin when you say Oxy’s, this is never a drug prescribed for this type of procedure since this med is meant for Long-Term pain relief of chronic pain. This drug should also never be crushed because it releases the entire dose of the medication into your system when it should last 8-12 hours.
If you mean just oxycodone, even that is quite a bit to take in addition to the percocet and again, O really dount a doctor would prescribe both of these medications at the same time because of the risk of OD, diversion of the drugs, and/or addiction/dependence. But, if this is indeed the case and if they are not working when you take them with food you can try taking them with an empty stomach if they do not cause you nausea and vomiting. This can happen with pain medication when you take it with food and it is much more common when you take it without. The only benefit to this is that is does work faster and a little better. You also need to make sure that you stay on the schedule prescribed by your doctor for the first few days. If you stay ahead of the pain, it is controlled much easier. Whether you are taking Oxycontin or not, you should never ever crush your pills. This is not how they are meant to be used and it would be a shame for you to find that you like the euphoric feeling that they cause and become addicted. If you can not swallow anything, there is a liquid form of hydrocodone and oxycodone so call your doctor and explain. This will also take effect faster and eliminates any chewing.

Wow. First off, please be careful. Percocet and oxy are the exact same medicine so don’t take both at the same time or you can cause serious repercussions (such as overdosing). Now as for your question: Yes, if you crush up these meds into food, they do become less effective because they get absorbed into the foods and some obviously doesn’t get to your bloodstream. It is better to take the pill whole with a sip of soda (or other carbonated beverage) this will help you swallow them. DO not crush them.
