i believe they are both at least partially genetic, and believe there to be other series issues beyond the actually addiction of either alcohol and/or drugs.

Absolutely.
You can be addicted to anything that can be repeated (Some easier then others).

Absolutely. Addiction is “being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming”. The “habit or practice” doesn’t necessarily have to be a substance.
