How to Stop an Addiction?

Question by David: How to stop an addiction?
My addiction is junk food. I already weigh 210 lbs, and don’t want to gain weight, but every time I see a fast food restaurant, I just want to eat more of it despite its abundance of calories and fat in it. I’m really scared that I’ll get sick, but nothing seem to break me free from this addiction.

Current thinking is that addictions are mechanisms we use to distract ourselves from what is *really* going on in our lives: it takes our minds off the real problem. This is why people who address the specific addiction without looking at it’s underlying cause move from one addiction to the next– they go from drugs to alcohol to gambling to sex because the real problem is as bad as ever.

It’s important to try to get to the root cause, and that usually takes some pretty intense therapy and a lot of honesty on your part.

Good luck!
