How Would You Handle a Family Member With a Shopping Addiction?

Question by snowfairy82: How would you handle a family member with a shopping addiction?
My mom has a bad shopping addiction- she uses shopping to fill the void of me moving out and of her father dying over 2 years ago…her house is FILLED with clutter and bags of stuff. She proclaims that she “needs” these things while is gets depressed over the messy house situation, in which she shops more to make herself feel better. This is a vicious cycle. Everyone in the family knows about it.
Any advise on how to handle this? Do you think a family intervention is appropriate? Anyone been through something similar with a friend or family member? SERIOUS ADVICE ONLY!

hmmm this is interesting.

have you guys tried taking her paycheck away and credit cards? i know that sounds harsh but, there obviously needs to be someone else taking care of her financials. someone who gets her money and then pays off her bills with it. then give her money that she will only need for gas, groceries and such..then save the rest. otherwise i have no clue and hope she gets better.
