Question by ms kay: Is it a spiritual problem when there is an addiction?
Do you think that addiction is a spiritual problem? I mean when you look at record of the rehabilitation centers and the many people who suffer relapse and recidivism. Don’t you think that a “Divine Intervention” is in order?

In a sense, yes, it is a spiritual problem that ends up being a physical problem. Divine Intervention can be forth coming, but you need to do your part first: stop the drinking, go through detox and go through a 12-step program.

I love your question. It is a perfect question to ask.
It is all about the cross and the Spirit.
There is no human being alive who doesn’t struggle with addiction in some form or another. We all come into the world with a nature , that causes us to want to take the easy way out, and turn to things, people, substance to meet our needs.
Without coming to Christ, and having our sin nature dealt with, we will continue to do this. Even so many people who are Christians still struggle and people may ask , or think that having Jesus doesn’t work. This is a fair question to ask.
I have experienced this too- being stuck , even as a Believer unable to overcome addiction and compulsions, but I found freedom.
It is all in an “ugly” word, ” surrender”
We may decide we want Jesus to be our Savior, but not be quite ready to let Him decide what we do with our bodies, minds, and hearts. Nobody wants to stop doing things that make them feel good. It is usually when we can see clearly the price we are paying for our short term feel good, in the long run.
Divine intervention comes through many means- God uses many people, books, groups, His word, His spirit, nature, songs, and many countless other things to intervene- especially our own will , as He works in us to bring us to a place where we desire to change.
That is a miracle- given the fact our bodies are wired against our spirits in some ways in that short term gratification is incredibly appealing to our flesh.
When something else becomes more important than giving in, then recovery is possible, and it is amazing. Knowing that you have a purpose, and that God has a good plan for our lives keeps the drug, compulsion, habit, in perspective, and His power does give us strength to resist the temptation to give in again.
It is a battle every single human being faces in one form or another.
