Meth Addict Research?

Question by Peter: Meth addict research?
I am writing a screenplay for a full length movie. One of my characters is the mother of the main character.

I have her living in the woods with her child in a shack. She beats him one day causing him to run away. While her kid is running away she overdoes and dies.

I’m not sure I have to stick with meth as the drug of choice.
I need a drug that causes violent outburst and tendencies to completely neglect your child.
I need a drug that will cause her to go into a comatose state, causing her son to have to usually take care of her.

In breaking bad, Jessie and his girlfriend are meth addicts and she says you have to sleep on your side incase you throw up…well she didn’t and that ended bad….
Something like that, but I don’t want to use that exact example for obvious reasons. Just want to know things like that, that are a constant worry for any drug addict. Little tricks and tips on how not to die while doing drugs.

My last script was involving guns and it was suggested to me to go to a gun shop and ask questions. So I did. But I don’t know any drug addicts…so…

Hopefully someone can give me some ideas, thanks in advance.

How about heroin? Its deeply addictive, causes illness if the addiction is not maintained and BONUS: the high from heroin makes you not give a shit about anything except getting your next fix, causes a nearly comatose state when high. Just not sure about the violent outbursts during use.

Note: not a drug addict- just a listener and an observer- I had a girlfriend who used.
