Should I Leave My Temp Assignment for Another One?

Question by Janette: should i leave my temp assignment for another one?
i’m on a temp assignment hoping to get hired after 90 days. i’m covering for someone who’s been out more than in, & he’s currently on workmen’s compensation, i believe its addiction-related, not sure. i’ve made it clear i’m interested in getting hired, but no one’s given me any definites. all they say is they “dont know what’s gonna happen” & they’ll “get back to me” but they never do. another agency istrying to place me at another temp-to-perm spot, but it didnt make sense to leave one temp assignment for another. the other agency swears it could go permanent if they like me. that’s more than what i’m being told at my current temp assignment. this guy can return to work & i’m out of a temp job. the other agency contacted me a 2nd time trying to still get me on that temp to perm spot
i dont know what i should do. can anyone advise?

One serious consideration– if you leave your present job, that will not look good to the temp agency you are currently working for. You may not be able to go back to work for them.

Secondly, the second agency is making a few promises when they are just desperate to fill their position. They may say anything to fill it.

I would not keep telling them you would like to be permanent– you don’t want to nag. They are in a difficult position as well. If you keep your wits about you, and wait it out, then you will probably still be continually employed. And isn’t that really the main goal?

I would definitely get out of the job that is not a sure thing and go for this other one. You have a right to do what is best for you. I am in a similar situation myself–I am in what is supposed to be a temp-to-perm position, but it looks as though this may never happen. The environment is very hostile and unhealthy, and I complained to the temp agency that I want out so that I can pursue more definite, less aggravating opportunities. Life is too short for this kind of headache.
