Ask her if she knows how much money she’s putting into the pockets of the big tobacco companies, and how much they WANT her to keep on smoking–only because they are making profits!

Here’s the scoop on smoking and being addicted to tobacco.

The funny thing about quitting is this: Most smokers won’t quit because they’re afraid they’ll go through a horrible withdrawal. The truth is, that you go through withdrawal from nicotine about 15 minutes AFTER EVERY CIGARETTE. When you sleep at night, you are in heavy withdrawal–and it doesn’t even wake most people up! That’s how MILD withdrawal from nicotine really is. You’re done with the physical withdrawal within 5 days of stopping. You’re NEVER done with the mental addiction. It only takes about 5 days to clean out your entire system of nicotine. It’s NOT a physical addiction after that–it’s a mental one.

Most smokers can get through about 5 days before they go crazy. They miss the feel–the way a cigarette smells–the HABIT they’ve cultivated of having one at certain times of the day. They want that little ‘security blanket’ they used to have. In order to make quitting stick, you have to change your habits, and air out your clothes and house–get rid of all the associations you have with smoking–no matter how minor! Most people do not do this when they quit, and within a few days they’re being reminded of times, situations, even ideas that are associated with smoking. They don’t consider themselves Ex-Smokers, they consider themselves Smokers who have been forced to quit–there’s no positive spin on it for them. It’s PUNISHMENT. It’s NECESSARY EVIL. This is the wrong way to think about it, if you want to quit. You have to constantly remind yourself how good it is NOT TO BE A SLAVE to cigarettes! You have to get rid of all the ashtrays, change your habits and your routines–or you won’t quit successfully; you’ll always feel you were coerced into it.

Keep in mind that there is absolutely NOT ONE SINGLE GOOD THING ABOUT SMOKING. None. Nothing. Nada. ZILCH. ZIP. ZERO. You can’t recommend it for any reason, it makes you smell bad, makes you look older, gives you wrinkles and bad skin, hurts every system in your body, makes your family breathe the foul air it produces, burns holes in your clothes and furniture, poses a fire hazard in your home, and hastens your demise by at least 20 minutes every time you light up. (three cigarettes=1 hour of life GONE! 1 pack a day=half a day of life GONE! How can anyone justify this?)

Smoking makes every illness you have take longer to heal. It ruins your immune system. It makes your voice sound horrible, makes you cough up yellow and black goo, and makes you really unappealing to others.

You can reclaim all of your health and life if you stop. It’s never too late. NEVER. You can smell better. You can feel better. You can stop the destruction.

You can break the addiction very easily. Just WANT to. The physical effects of stopping are nothing major–and actually not even bad.

A really good book on the issue is called “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking” by Alan Carr. He details what and why people smoke and how to end the grip it has on you.

Good luck to you and your mom.
