Sugar Addiction? Diabetes?
Question by toomuchtv23: sugar addiction? diabetes?
My boyfriends 7 yo daughter is addicted to sugar in a major way. Always asking for snacks with sugar, obsessing over it. Wherever we go, shes always bugging people for snacks. She goes to her grandmas house & the first thing she does is go to her cabinet where all the junk food is & automatically starts asking if she can have it. She gets mad when she doesn’t get sugar. She sneaks out of her room in the middle of the night & steals cookies, cakes, snack bars puddings etc. She wakes up in the middle of the night & brings it in her room. Shes already been diagnosed with ADHD. Could she have diabetes? Im worried!
Today I caught her going through the bathroom garbage and licking an old ice cream wrapper. She got embarrassed. Thats not the first time she dug in the garbage for sugar. A few weeks ago I threw pudding in the garbage & I caught her eating it directly out of the garbage can.
Its very bad. We try keeping her off of sugary foods & drinks, but I think is making it worse
I also WANTED to add that she eats regularly. 3 meals a day with snacks in between. Ive been going for fruits and vegetables for snacks, or crackers… things like that. She doesn’t want it. Shes not sneaking out in the middle of the night and sneaking hotdogs or cheese… its purely sugary things she’s craving and sneaking. She is super skinny but eats about twice as much as her dad and I

Wow. That’s extreme. I doubt it’s diabetes but you should definitely take her in to the pediatrician and see whats up. It might be metabolic, or just simply related to her ADHD.

Another Beavis? Check out the one where he eats all that sugar and goes crazy at school. Anyway this stuff is very additive. A sugar high is much like an alcohol high, This girl is going to have some major health problems if she doesn’t quit. After you get her off this junk food I’m sure her behavior will improve.

Yes, addiction. I don't use the word lightly in its traditional sense—we're not addicted to chips in the way a minor cleric in the Church of England might be addicted to reading the novels of Anthony Trollope. I'm talking about full-blown, vein …
