What Is the Best Way to Get Over Bad Habit or Addiction?

Question by julybaby: What is the best way to get over bad habit or addiction?
This isn’t abt serious addictions like heroin, alcohol, but rather bad habits like watching tv all night when I should be reading a book.

If you have overcome something, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks!

I overcame spending 12 hours a day answering questions here by getting off my bum and going out and doing things 🙂
Set yourself a goal (say 30 mins reading) and then reward yourself with something (maybe some TV time). Increase the amount of time spent on the goal activity until you are doing what you need to.

I would actually start something else, the best way for me is to “just do it”! I did something yesterday that I have been meaning to do for years and it felt so good afterwards, I felt like I accomplished a huge thing! I know it’s not much, but it’s all i have to offer 🙂

If it’s taking control of your life you have a problem.

Answer by bmac
Being addicted to anything is bad. Some, of course, have different consequences. An addiction is anything you have no control over and that interferes with your everyday life. Anything that keeps you from your responsibilities: like paying bills on time or at all, not being able to work, makes you sick or you end up breaking the law.

How Does Nicotine Addiction Work?

Question by The Kweef: How does nicotine addiction work?
How frequently do you have to smoke, and for how long, before you become addicted to cigarettes?

Answer by yess!ca
nicotine addiction varies from person to person. some people have a genetic predisposition to be very sensitive to nicotine, in which case they get alot more form one cig than a regular person would, thus they smoke less and do not become addicted.

i read a book that included a study that was conducted on nicotine addiction which puts the ‘tipping point’ of cigarette addiction at most probable in those who smoke over 4 a day. after that point you are very likely to become hooked.
some people on the basis of a purely addictive personality will be hooked for life from the first one. some people will smoke casually 1 or 2 a day, or a few a week and never become addicted at all.

Do You Think That All Addictions Are Bad?

Question by Miles Edgeworth: Do you think that all addictions are bad?
Obviously things like drug and alcohol addictions are bad and impact negatively on the user’s life, but would you consider seemingly benign addictions such as an addiction to postage stamp collection also a negative? I’m sorry if my question is unclear. English is my second language.

Too much of anything will kill you. Even water.

Answer by Bryce
Your question is clear enough.

You make a good point. But yes, any addiction is bad if it ultimately impacts a person negatively — even collecting stamps can be a negative addiction if it keeps a person from doing anything else.

My Yahoo Answers addiction is another example: it keep me from trying to write, which part of me want to do very much, but apparently a bigger part of me just wants to be a smart-aleck question-answerer!

I find it so hopeless to quit my addiction and other unhealthy behaviors. The more I try to stop something, the more it bugs me. The more I stop thinking about it, the more it haunts me. The more I control the urges, the more they haunt me. What can I do about this? Help me, please. Thanks.

Not knowing what addictions you are referring to, make it difficult to give advice.

You work of keeping yourself free from an addiction one day at a time.
You stay away from the thing you are addicted to–and people and things associated with it.
There are inpatient/detox centers if you are addictied to alcohol or drugs.
There are 12 step Program meetings, books, etc which provide great support.
There is therapy with a counselor/psychiatrist.
medication may also help.
Addictions are compulsive behaviours that a person does to help cope with something.
You need to find out what it is you are trying to cope with–by using an addiction.

We all have all kinds of habit. Some are “good habits” like brushing your teeth, others are “bad habits” like driving without a seatbelt. A habit should only be called an “addiction” when the person who does the behavior is unhappy about the behavior, doesn’t want to do it, but can’t stop. I drink coffee every day, but I don’t have a problem with that, so I don’t call it an addiction. It’s just a habit. Now, if you have decided that you have a habit of looking at internet porn that disrupts your life, makes you unhappy, and you can’t stop it, then BINGO, you have an addiction. There are 12 step programs for sex addicts and porn is one of the big issues there. Google “sex addicts anonymous” and try to find out where you can attend a local meeting. They will at least provide you with a supportive forum for confronting your issue. Good luck.
