Drug and alcohol treatment centers are distributed throughout the world. They encompass many inspiring and tragic stories of individual struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. Each struggle is different as are the treatment centers. The paths sometimes overlap and sometimes diverge, which gives rise to new opportunities, fresh starts and the chance for a permanent solution to addiction.

In general, treatment centers may be categorized into traditional and non-traditional camps. Traditional treatment centers rely on the highly publicized 12-Step Program whereas non-traditional treatment programs break away from the tenants of the 12-Step Program in search of a more successful outcome. Although the 12-Step Program has been widely publicized, its success rate at keeping individuals from relapse and turning back to drug and alcohol abuse is in the neighborhood of two percent. Addiction is a treatable condition. Unlike other diseases, however, addicts must choose to seek help before they can be successfully treated. However, once an addict commits to treatment, there is a real hope of achieving sustainable results and ultimately overcoming addiction.

The disease of addiction can manifest in many different behaviours. A common perception of addiction is of drug and alcohol abuse.But addictive behaviours can include compulsive gambling, relationship addictions and eating disorders, amongst others. Common to all such behaviours are the fundamental emotional difficulties that need to be treated in order to arrest addiction.
