ask Lindsy logan paris hilton britney spears etc.

Answer by raysny
Most rehabs are AA based, a sort of crash course (or brainwashing, if you prefer). AA members love to joke about how the new members spent thousands of dollars just to be told to go to free meetings.

AA has about a 5% success rate; don’t believe a rehab that claims high success rates. (They love returning customers.)

“One recent study found that 80% of all alcoholics who recover for a year or more do so on their own, some after being unsuccessfully treated. When a group of these self-treated alcoholics was interviewed, 57% said they simply decided that alcohol was bad for them. Twenty-nine percent said health problems, frightening experiences, accidents, or blackouts persuaded them to quit. Others used such phrases as “Things were building up” or “I was sick and tired of it.” Support from a husband or wife was important in sustaining the resolution.”

Gambling Addiction — How Can We Stop?

Question by Wondering: Gambling addiction — how can we stop?
**Note I posted this under gambling, and now under mental health. If this is breaking a Yahoo! community guideline, just let me know. Thanks.**

When I met my husband, I would hate to waste $ 5 in a slot machine. After years of sitting next to him while he played roulette, I started playing — and was good at it. I’d win $ 1000, $ 2000, $ 5000 a pop. There was a time when I’d go just to get extra money. Then I came into a big windfall of money. He and I went nuts — now we have unpaid bills, empty bank account and a shameful gambling problem.

Please don’t just say “stop going,” because we said that at least 100 times — and many thousands of dollars — ago.

Smoking Addiction Question?

Question by Kaitlyn: Smoking addiction question?
I’ve been smoking 1-5 cigarettes a day for the past 2 weeks, and my question is.. how long till I get addicted?

Best answer:

Answer by crooked_grindking
about 3 months give or take 5 days or so

Answer by Dowlinggram
Why do you want to do that–thousands of people trying to quit and you want to start–unbelievable. Let me tell you about quitting smoking. Ask someone who’s quit. They’ll tell you it was the hardest thing they’ve ever done. Once you’ve quit the craving never goes away. It will always surface and you have to resist. Besides the health risks there is the expense. You are burning up thousands of dollars every year that you might want to spend on something else but your craving and habit won’t let you.

You may be addicted now. It doesn’t take long and the amount you smoke will go up. Do yourself a favor and stop now

Addiction – What Is Inherently Wrong With It?

Question by Halsfield: Addiction – What is inherently wrong with it?
(I restarted this question because i laid the last question out sloppily and people were missing my point)

Question: What is wrong with being addicted to something? Everyone is addicted to something right now, but people seem to have this great fear and abhorrence for drug addiction without really explaining or knowing why it seems.

Definition: addiction is a state in which the body relies on a substance for normal functioning and develops physical dependence. When this substance is suddenly removed, it will cause withdrawal, a characteristic set of signs and symptoms

If One Goes to a Doctor for Assistance in Kicking Painkiller Addiction, Do They Get Put on a “list”?

Question by Devoidance: If one goes to a doctor for assistance in kicking painkiller addiction, do they get put on a “list”?
I had a series of fairly severe injuries that wound up with me prescribed percocet and then norco. I was on the two for about six months. When I’d healed and tried to stop taking them, I suffered terrible withdrawal symptoms, and, as a result, wound up buying more black market. That was a year ago.

Now, I know the smart thing would have been to tell my doctor that this was happening when I’d first been slated to stop taking them, but, in truth, I’d liked the effects and they were available. Now, in retrospect, I see how incredibly stupid I was.
