Former first lady Betty Ford passed away Friday at the age of 93. Ford’s own life led to a wave of advocacy of different causes while her husband was president of the United States. She had a mastectomy in 1974, just two months after President Gerald R. Ford succeeded to the office after Richard Nixon resigned.
