Causes of Addiction: Want to Lose Weight When You Have a Food Addiction?

We all know that food is for when you are hungry but there are those of us who use food for other purposes like to comfort us when we are lonely, sad or upset. It is at these times when we can easily overdose on potato chips or cookies. Food addiction is more common than you may think. If you are suffering from a food addiction and trying to lose weight you may have more problems than those who try to lose weight and do not suffer from a food addiction. One important key to losing weight is to be able to understand how to use food properly and how to eat a nutritious diet. If you have a food addiction not only can it derail your attempts to lose weight but also it can have potentially serious consequences for your health according to health experts.

A food addiction is an overwhelming desire to eat a particular food. A desire so strong that should you not be able to consume that food you will experience withdrawal symptoms including headaches, depression and nausea. They crave a particular food because that food gives them comfort. Food addicts may also engage in binge eating. Food cravings can be both physical and psychological in nature.

Food addiction comes in many varieties including compulsive overeating, bulimia and anorexia. When a person compulsively overeats they go on eating binges that can last for days. This person can lose weight, but will gain it back. They typically eat quickly, eat alone and eat even when they are not hungry. The person suffering from bulimia also overeats, but then purges by vomiting or by taking laxatives. This person also eats alone, and tries to consume large portions of food rapidly. This person is obsessed with how much they weigh. The person with anorexia has a goal of achieving an unrealistic weight and in trying to achieve this goal may actually starve him or herself intentionally. Individuals suffering from anorexia tend to be 15% below normal body weight for their height. These individuals have a phobia about being fat. They prefer to eat alone because they have difficulty eating in front of others. They may have rituals involving food and may also suffer from depression.

The person with a food addiction can receive treatment. The individual can be counseled individually by a psychotherapist experienced in dealing with food addictions or can undergo in-patient treatment at a psychological facility. Treatment involves learning healthy eating habits and how to deal with the underlying emotional causes for the addiction and then learning how to cope with those causes.

Food addictions can be seen to run in families so there may be a genetic connection that is still being explored by researchers.

It is possible over time for individuals with food addictions to be able to learn healthy eating habits and to be able to maintain a healthy weight. Often it is the pain endured because of the harmful eating habits involved in food addictions that spur the individual on to seek help for their addiction.
