Causes of Addiction: What Causes Drug Addiction?

What is drug addiction?

Drug addiction is one where an individual needs drugs almost on a daily basis and has physical, psychological, emotional and social dependence on the drug. The withdrawal of the drug produces symptoms such as weakness, cramps, emotional instability, vomiting, seizures, sleeplessness and restlessness. Repeated use of psychoactive (mood-altering) drugs seems to cause compulsive behaviour. Drug addicts cannot stop the use of the drug, as they are physically and psychologically addicted. It has been estimated that one out of every ten people using psychoactive drugs becomes an addict. Drug abuse is not only a health hazard but also an economic and social hazard. It enhances crime and violence and makes an individual totally distorted.

There has been a controversy over the cause of drug addiction Historically, it was thought that addiction was caused by lack of willpower, low self-esteem, poverty, moral weakness, frustration, anxiety and other mental illnesses, genetic predisposition, family socialisation, antisocial personality and societal problems. Some scientists believe that drug addiction is a disease, which is produced by an addictive chemical in the drug. Some drugs are more addictive than others. The addiction is common in people who have low self-esteem, who feel bad about themselves, who are unbalanced, who are prone to anxiety and who are emotionally liable. The environment also plays a very important role in inducing addiction. All these factors — addictive chemicals in drugs, the character of an addict and the social environment, are responsible for addiction.Visit at www.shreevedic.com
