Drug use or abuse crosses the line into drug addiction when you feel you have to have the drug, and you increase the amount of the drug you take. Various factors, such as your personality, your genetic makeup and peer pressure, affect your likelihood of becoming addicted to a drug. In addition, some drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, more quickly produce a physical addiction than other drugs do for many people.
Physical addiction appears to occur when repeated use of a drug alters reward pathways in your brain. The addicting drug causes physical changes to some nerve cells (neurons) in your brain.

Question by Riot Grrrl: What causes sexual addiction?
I’ve done some research and don’t believe it is about sexual abuse as a child. That seems to be the only thing that comes up. I believe I am a sex addict and was never abused in any way at all. My parents treated me wonderfully. How does this happen to someone with a normal, if not great, childhood? I think it would be some sort of chemical imbalance in the brain, but I can’t find any supporting evidence. Anybody know what could cause it?

I find this to be a very difficult topic. I am unsure to what the real cause behind it is. Therefore I can not give a good or valid answer
