How Long Would You Stay in the Hospital…?

Question by ???: How long would you stay in the hospital…?
If someone passed out from malnutrition caused by an eating disorder and somebody else took them to the hospital, would the hospital admit them to a rehab or something? The person in the hospital would be under eighteen. Please be as specific as possible with your information.

Note: This is for a piece of fiction I am writing. I have no history of mental illness, eating disorders, or self-harm. Please do not tell me I am “worth it” — this isn’t about me. Thanks.

The hospital would keep them in until they had stabilised and they were in no immediate danger

What they would do next would depend. It would depend on the situations, but what they would do if they were under 18 would be to speak to their parents or guardians

I think they would have a psychiatric consultation and take it from there. They might refer them to rehab if they thought they were at serious risk, but normally they would treat them as an out-patient. They would make appointments to measure their food intake and weight, and also counseling sessions to try and deal with the underlying problem.

I live in the Uk and rehab is normally used for addictions to isolate the people from temptation. For eating disorders, people are normally treated as an out-patient as that way they can get support from friends and family and the aim is to normalise their eating. Treating them in rehab would be counter productive as you can maybe make someone eat normally when they are in the clinic, but they might slip back into old habits once they are released
