Research: Do You Have Mental Illness or Drug Addiction Problem?

Question by Ramaul: Research: Do you have mental illness or drug addiction problem?
I’m not looking for internet answers, I’m looking for second-hand experience. So if you do have mental illness or drug addiction I would appreciate it if you would please edify me.

How do you or other people with mental health and/or addiction feel about their experience?

What stigma do you “personally” experience as a result of your condition and what impact did it have on you?

What services do you use for support?

What do you think needs to be done to minimize or eliminate the stigma associated with mental health and/or addiction

Thank you very much for your time and honesty. I very much appreciate it!

I’m an ex heroin addict, ten years addicted, off it now for eight years. How do I feel about it? It’s not worth being upset about now because it’s history and I can’t change the past, all I can do is to put it down to experience and use that to avoid making similar mistakes in the future. I don’t have problems with stigma because it’s no longer the case but addicts are generally treated with contempt, which is why I don’t normally mention this part of my past. No services needed, I’m off it. However, the existing services are useless in the UK, I had to sort it out by myself. What do I think needs to be done to reduce stigma? Education is the only thing that has a chance, however the hate filled right wing media more than counteracts any good that this could do.

I have bipolar disorder. To answer your questions if you don’t have a mental illness you can try to understand and say that you do but unless its actually happening to you you cant begin to understand. The most irritating and offensive thing people do is to blame any emotional response or just a plain bad mood on the disorder, ” its just the bipolar speaking” is not something that they are allowed to say or think if they they are not struggling with it. Luckily for me I have a very close and understanding family. I think if people where more educated on what bipolar disorder is and how it effects the person they might understand it better and be able to deal with it and help those of us who are actually living with it. hope it helped.
