Are Alcoholism and Drug Addiction REALLY Diseases?

Question by lily: Are alcoholism and drug addiction REALLY diseases?
Or is this just an excuse for bad choices? Or are we trying to legalize and give credibility to social problems?

If nicotine addiction is the hardest one to overcome, why isn’t it treated more seriously?

They are as much diseases as any psychological disease can be called that. Nicotine addiction is tough, but it isn’t treated more seriously because it does not pose an immediate threat to your life. Yes, cigarettes could cause cancer… but they are legal and you choose to consume them, at that point the addiction is a moot point. Someone who is determined to quit can quit, and there are plenty of mechanisms in place to help. Of course, as far as I know, there is no such thing as a 12-step program for cigarette quitters… they tend not to ruin your life or the lives of those around you, until you do finally get cancer.

Let's ban smoking. It makes you smell, cough, look old, get sick – and it's

Nicotine Addiction, Help!!?

Question by Craig: Nicotine addiction, help!!?
I gave up smoking 7 months ago but I’m still hopelessly addicted to nicotine replacement therapy. I use the inhalators. Two questions really 1. Does nicotine on it’s own cause any health problems/benefits and 2. Any suggestions on cutting down at all. Thanks in advance.

Nicotine on its own is bad for people with heart/circulation problems. It seems to prevent diseases such as Parkinson and Alzheimer. It is a mild stimulant (sometimes relaxant – yes, strange) and you may find it in nature in plants other than tobacco, namely in tomatoes. Cutting down? Will power, I see no other way.

Question by s.g.: i need a new vice/ addiction!?
i quit popping pills 2 years ago i was pretty much an alcoholic and now drink once in a great while and never get wasted. so smoking cigs is my only vice since i told myself no getting wasted or anything else. however i want to quit smoking really badly and now i have electronic cigarettes. im fearing that once i stop smoking cigs i will have no vice officially and ill go crazy! any ideas?

My belief is that is perfectly acceptable to have a vice. As long as it makes you feel better, relaxed, calm, etc. The only problem is that if your like me, this can turn into addiction. I think it makes you a real human being to have that one crutch or need. Nobody is perfect. If you quit smoking (which I choose to be my vice) try to find a positive,a way of growing or maturing as a human being. I wish you luck.
