You would still get the negative affects of nicotine, including addiction and the hardening of arteries. The patches come in steps though, that gradually ween you off from using the patch, and the crutch of nicotine altogether.
Answer by Czar Walters, Child Saver!
You would remain addicted to nicotine for the rest of your life. Other than that, you may experience dermal irritation at the application site. That’s why it is recommended that the site be changed from time to time, to reduce potential dermal reactions.
It would certainly be a healthier alternative to inhaling cigarette smoke, or chewing tobacco! It is still unkown whether or not nicotine is itself a carcinogen. There isn’t much research to point to answer that question.

Does This Mean I Am Addicted to Cigarettes?
Question by latinasophia: Does this mean i am addicted to cigarettes?
When i started college I made friends with a whole load of new people & every single one of those people smoke. I always told myself I would never smoke. I would stand with them outside while they had a cigarette so I know I was a passive smoker. At a party i was a little drunk & just decided to light up & have a smoke. I know find myself finishing off my friends cigarette when she doesn’t want the rest & sometimes when I am at home I find myself wanting a cigarette & I get quite irritable & annoyed over the fact that I can’t as I don’t have any. Am I addicted?

I think that you are on your way to addiction, but you are not addicted yet. You are not smoking enough and what you are suffering is more related to the psychological component of addiction.

I quit on 12/25/06 using Chantix. It relally helped me get over the hump. I had some minor urges the first two weeks after quiting and I still get an occasional urge but the medication made it a whole lot easier. I have since stoped taking it (last weekend)and still haven’t had a puff.
Answer by laneylou
Hi….I quit smoking with Chantix a little over 2 months ago. I think that it has been a miracle so far! I started taking it a week before my quit date, and by the time my quit date came, I was ready to quit! I had some weird side effects like nausea, strange dreams and rapid heartbeat a couple of times, but it all went away after a couple weeks. I actually felt confident enough to stop taking the medication a couple weeks ago and still havent had a desire to smoke. Hang in there, it will work…especially if you want it to! Good luck.
