Why Do a Lot of Schizophrenics Like to Smoke Cigarettes and Drink Coffee?

Question by ? Plea for Peace!: why do a lot of schizophrenics like to smoke cigarettes and drink coffee?
i’ve read that something like 90% of schizophrenics smoke cigarettes, and i’ve also heard that a large percentage drink a lot more coffee than those considered normal.

does anyone have any ideas? the smoking i can understand if it’s an obsessive behavior, but i wonder if the nicotine in cigs or the caffeine in coffee has anything to do with it?

I think I read recently that they have an inability to experience pleasure normally, and cigarettes fill that need. I don’t know about the coffee. I will say that I drink a hell of a lot of coffee & I have bipolar. Oh wait, found this on schizohprenia.com:

Has Anyone Had Any Experience With Withdrawal From Xanax?

Question by Ready for change: Has anyone had any experience with withdrawal from Xanax?
I have been taking Xanax for about 5 yeasr, i have withdran from it last year, and i was so happy, but now i started taking it again, even though a small dosage it is addictive. I want to stop taking this poison, i found this fantastic site www.benzo.org.uk, that is also a support group and advises on slow tapering by using valium. My biggest concern is finding a doctor In Toronto, that will prescribe this for me, and is benzo educated and is willing to help. Most docotors just prescribe and do not know how it feels when you take them or stop taking them. It is a drug that posions you and your brains i know all the side effects and can feel them. I just need proffesional help, but cannot find it yet, since i am new to Canada and do not have health insurance yet. Hoping to get help on locating a good psyciatrist in toronto. I located many, but most told me thay do not work with medications.??? Where do i go???
Just to explain, i am taking 0,25 mg of xanax twice a day. So how do i cut it off! Doctors on this website suggest it is better to taper it off with Valium because it is more smoother and has a longer life!

What Is the Longer-Term Prognosis for Someone Addicted to Methamphetamine?

Question by Laura A: What is the longer-term prognosis for someone addicted to methamphetamine?
I recently found out my very best friend was born addicted to crystal meth, and I *know* that causes a lot of developmental delays and health problems. What I’m wondering is if anyone knows what a general long-term prognosis for someone born addicted to meth would be? I.E. what would be a general guideline of any health issues or problems that could arise for a former meth baby from ages 18 to 24, if any?

Thanks!

From MAMA:

And indeed that is what the studies demonstrate. When methamphetamine exposed children are studied at age eight to ten, the cavitary lesions and ventricular dilation are no longer seen (Smith 2001) . All of the children in this study had been exposed to methamphetamine with very low levels of exposure to other drugs of abuse, including alcohol. Children with developmental delay, impaired growth, seizure disorders or ADHD were excluded. Only those children who looked perfectly normal were studied. There are no scientific studies to indicate what percentage of methamphetamine exposed children have developmental delays, learning disabilities or ADHD.
